The inception of this captivating tale takes us to the picturesque city of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, where a meeting of two souls with a shared purpose occurred. The historical Ukrainian national embroidered shirt, symbolizing national spirit and traditions, found its way to this city thanks to 34-year-old Kyiv resident Kristina Korniyuk, who turned out to be the driving force behind this unique event.
Kristina, who had weathered challenging circumstances in Ukraine and found refuge in Cambridge, crossed paths with her best friend Rand Playtings. This friendship seemed destined, as Rend emerged not only as a gracious host but also as an individual deeply appreciative of Ukrainian culture and traditions.
Upon learning about “Dyen Vyshyvanky” (Embroidered Shirt Day) and its significance to Ukrainians, Kristina was inspired to share this idea with her friend. The depth of symbolism behind this holiday and Rend’s desire to support the Ukrainian people prompted her to take an active role in realizing this initiative.
Rend’s home took on a new persona, adorned with the colorful hues of the Ukrainian flag, serving as a testament to her support. The initiative, born from the collaboration of two compassionate souls, swiftly gained momentum and backing.
However, Rend’s commitment extended beyond local support. She sought to elevate this initiative to a new level,
This incredible initiative not only offers visual appreciation of the enormous embroidered shirt but also provides an opportunity to join a unique collective. During Independence Day celebrations, visitors will be able to sign the shirt at three different locations, each signifying the roles of the Armed Forces, police, and anti-corruption media. This symbolic act embodies our respect and support for critical sectors of Ukrainian society.
After the festive day, the significant purpose of this initiative continues. The collection of signatures will persist, enriching the history of this embroidered shirt with new names and expressions of support. Every year, the shirt will be lent out as a trophy to various groups or charitable organizations, enabling the tradition to endure and uphold vital societal values.
The inaugural recipient of this grand “trophy” will be the Ukrainian public organization “Journalists Against Corruption,” reflecting its pivotal role in the media sphere and the fight for transparency and integrity. Symbolically, the first-year embroidered shirt will be passed to this organization, which works for the betterment of Ukrainian society.
This initiative has evolved beyond a mere cultural expression; it has become a true emblem of collective support, pride, and unwavering faith in Ukraine’s future.
